The National Chief Imam, Shaikh Dr Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has reaffirmed the legitimacy of Shaikh Ali Muniru as the Volta Regional Imam, following the Friday, December 26 shooting incident at the Ho Central Mosque.
In a statement issued on Monday, December 29, and signed by the Personal Assistant to the National Chief Imam, Dr Abubakar Mohammed Marzuq Azindoo, His Eminence highlighted that the violent incident stemmed from an already settled leadership matter concerning the Volta Regional Imamship. He stressed that Shaikh Muniru remains the duly recognised Regional Imam, with Shaikh Anas serving as his Deputy.
According to the National Chief Imam, the selection of Shaikh Muniru was not imposed on the community but was the outcome of extensive consultation and mediation, making the continued dispute both unnecessary and unacceptable.
His Eminence expressed disappointment that a resolved matter had degenerated into violence within a sacred place of worship, describing the incident as contrary to Islamic teachings and values.
Referring to both clerics as his children, the National Chief Imam said he expects unity, mutual respect and cooperation from them in their service to Allah and the Muslim community. He also urged their supporters to remain law-abiding and to pursue peace in accordance with the principles of Islam.
The National Chief Imam further called on the Ghana Police Service to handle investigations into the incident with fairness and impartiality, warning that selective justice undermines confidence and fuels further tension.
He concluded by praying for the speedy recovery of those injured and called for reconciliation among all parties, citing the Quranic injunction that believers are brothers who must strive for peace and unity.
