There is no category ‘A’ senior high school (SHS) in three of the six newly created regions.

They are the North East, Savannah and Oti regions, the Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu has said.

He has, therefore, appealed to traditional leaders in the affected regions to play a crucial roles in partnership with the government to address the situation. 

Mr Iddrisu said this at the inauguration of the governing councils of four colleges of education in Accra.

The colleges are the Enchi College of Education with Dr Frank Kwekucher Acker as Council Chairman; Al-Faruq College at Wenchi with Yapeiwura A.B.T. Zakaria as Chairman and Gbewaa College of Education at Pusiga with Prof Imoro Braimah as Council Chairman; and the Agogo Presbyterian Women’s College of Education with Rev Prof Seth Asare-Danso as Chairman.

Mr Iddrisu explained that it was to address the issue of equity and inclusivity that he announced publicly the decision to convert 30 category ‘C’ schools to ‘B’ and 10 category ‘B’ schools to category ‘A’.

The minister further announced that the ministry intended to expand infrastructure in all the category A schools.

Mr Iddrisu hinted that for the Savannah, he intended to elevate the Damongo Girls’ SHS to a category ‘A’ school, but added that, “I will walk through the process in order that I do not compromise quality for a declaration of a category ‘A’ school.”

The minister gave the assurance that the school would receive some support to befit its new status as a category ‘A’ school, adding that the Domongo SHS would equality receive attemtion.
