The centre of Elad has come to a halt. Thousands of people crammed onto the streets, most of them in the black suits and wide-brimmed hats of the ultra-Orthodox. Next to the ambulances containing the bodies of the dead men at the head of the funeral cortège, a rabbi tells the crowd that the three have joined the long history of Jewish martyrs, killed for no other reason than their religion.
